Portobello Vegan Night Market celebrates their 3rd anniversary on Wednesday 14 July 2021. We caught up with Portobello Vegan to find out more about the fortnightly market.
Tell us about Portobello Vegan Market – what is it, when and how did you start?
It's a community celebration where everybody is welcome. Showcasing London’s finest vegan cuisine and ethical shopping. We are here to support small ethical businesses and plant seeds of love, compassion and kindness at the same time. It started on July 12th 2018 and it was started to bring a much needed and welcome alternative to the current events / markets on Portobello Road and it has done wonders for the area.
What is the Market’s biggest achievement?
Winning Best Vegan Market UK 2019 at the VegFest Awards, beating over 50 markets across the island.
Describe how has the market continued during the COVID-19 pandemic – how has it adapted? What are some of the challenges you have faced during this time?
We have the market's running but it hasn't been easy as we have to liaise with the Trust, RBKC and the Police to ensure a COVID safe event. We generally encourage everybody to keep it moving, use the park next door and to check out all the delights of Portobello Road.
What does this anniversary mean to you and the traders?
Everything, those that know the struggles and interference from certain entities on Portobello Road, understand it has been a group effort of love, integrity and courage.
What are your 5 top Vegan tips?
Don't put pressure on yourself when you first start out.
Plan your meals and shopping in advance but it gets so easy after a while.
Alternative cheeses and eats are great for transitioning but remember a whole food plant-based diet is the healthiest.
Visit vegan events and immerse yourself in the community, meet new friends etc.
Remember why you started and it will be the best thing you ever do for yourself, the animals and the planet.
What is a must see/do for visitors to the Vegan Night Market?
Just enjoy the vibes, dance, mingle and soak up the legendary energy.
